The policy dimensions of cross-boundary climate-related human mobility

When: 23 October 2025 | 11:15-12:25

Format: Breakout session

This event will focus on the policy dimensions of cross-boundary human mobility, using case studies from South-Eastern Europe (OSCE), the Caribbean (UNEP Haiti), the Pacific Islands (PIFS), and MENA/Iraq (IOM). The discussion will examine how climate change and environmental stressors shape human mobility patterns across borders, and consider the implications for conflict dynamics, as well as for the development of forward-looking policy frameworks that can enhance peacebuilding as well as adaptation and development efforts at national and regional levels. By highlighting lessons learned and best practices from these regions, the event aims to identify and inform practical approaches that reduce risks, foster resilience and promote co-operation within and across borders.

Speakers:

  • Prof. Dr Walter Kälin, Fellow, Robert Bosch Academy
  • Thomas Ritzer, Senior Advisor Climate Change and Security, Organization for Security and Co-operation (OSCE)
  • Timothy Bryar, Programme Adviser, Pacific Island Forum
  • Nicholas Bishop, Head, Climate Resilience & Security, International Organization for Migration (IOM)

Moderated by Dr Beatrice Mosello, Senior Adviser, adelphi
