Climate change already has an important impact on security and defence policy. This impact will continue to grow, making it increasingly urgent for armed forces to prepare and adapt to the effects of climate change. For some years now, the defence sector has been addressing the impact of climate change on the tasks and missions of armed forces. The issue has gained prominence with ambitious agendas in EU and NATO, and the publication of national strategies on climate change and defence by countries such as the United States, France and the United Kingdom. With the EU Strategic Compass committing member states to develop national strategies to prepare their armed forces for climate change by the end of 2023, there is now particular momentum for cooperation to move forward on the issue.
