Despite the urgency of Climate, Peace and Security (CPS) challenges in Latin America and Caribbean (LAC), the region is still not recognised as a priority within global CPS discussions and funding. Gaps also remain in connecting local and traditional knowledge and experience to global CPS debates. This Practical Note aims to fill these gaps. It explores regional CPS challenges and, most importantly, identifies practical solutions stakeholders should prioritise to address these challenges.

Brazil is facing a myriad of challenges where climate change, environmental degradation, and human security intersect. This Practical Note, based on the discussions held at the Berlin Climate and Security Conference in Rio de Janeiro (BCSC-Rio), brings together insights from local and international experts and practitioners to highlight the country’s most pressing climate and security issues, leadership and opportunities for international cooperation.

Biodiversity conservation plays a crucial role in addressing the challenges climate change and environmental degradation pose to human security and peace. This practical note explores how these agendas intersect in Latin America and the Caribbean, one of the world's most biodiverse regions. The document summarises the discussions held at BCSC-Cali during the past UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 16) in Colombia, including key highlights and priority action areas for various stakeholders.

This document is a result of the work of high level representatives of the Governments of the Republic of Kenya and the Federal Republic of Germany in partnership with adelphi and with participation of the civil society, the academia, climate security experts, and practitioners from international organisations including UN country offices, who gathered on July 6th 2023 in Nairobi, Kenya, on the inaugural Nairobi Edition of the Berlin Climate Security Conference (BCSC). They have identified the following six priorities for urgent action to adapt to and mitigate against the climate change induced peace and security challenges on the continent.

The UN edition of the Berlin Climate and Security Conference in New York City explored how the broader UN system can more effectively fulfil its mandate in an era of climate driven security risks and inform strategic approaches that navigate political challenges. Bridging the gap between recognition and action has emerged as one of the defining tasks of the climate, peace and security agenda.

The seventh Berlin Climate and Security Conference (BCSC) 2025 explored how to navigate climate, conflict, and cooperation in a turbulent era, highlighting the urgency of integrating climate security into responses to today’s geopolitical, humanitarian and development challenges.

The sixth Berlin Climate and Security Conference (BCSC) 2024 explored how to secure a climate for peace and highlighted the importance of integrating climate into the entire conflict cycle from prevention, to peacemaking, peacebuilding and post-conflict reconstruction.

On 6 October 2023, the climate security community of practice met in Berlin to examine the most urgent and cutting-edge issues in climate and security today, to critically interrogate complex new challenges like securing critical minerals for a conflict-sensitive energy transition and to discuss how high COP28 expectations on finance for fragile and vulnerable contexts and Loss and Damage can be realised.

The fourth Berlin Climate and Security Conference (BCSC) 2022 highlighted the importance of multilateral cooperation, inclusivity and locally-informed action to weather the risks resulting from interacting climate and conflict pressures. 

This year’s Berlin Climate and Security Conference (BCSC) focused on inclusive, actionable, and joined-up approaches to addressing climate-related risks to peace and security. From 27 September to 8 October 2021, adelphi convened the climate security community of practice digitally to discuss the most urgent and cutting-edge topics in this space.

In 2020, the Berlin Climate and Security Conference (BCSC) was once again the global meeting space to discuss how climate change is affecting peace and security and to explore the concrete actions to address climate-security risks.

To increase the momentum for addressing climate-related drivers of conflict, the German Federal Foreign Office in partnership with adelphi and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) hosted the Berlin Climate and Security Conference (BCSC) at the German Federal Foreign Office on 4 June 2019.
