Beyond borders: Regional and minilateral climate security in action
When: 23 October 2025 | 16:20-17:05
Format: Panel discussion
Venue: Plenary (Weltsaal)
While the urgency of climate security is widely recognised, traditional multilateral frameworks often struggle to deliver timely, context-specific solutions. This session explores how regional organisations, cross-regional alliances, and minilateral (plurilateral) initiatives are stepping in to fill the gap – offering new platforms for collective action, policy coordination, and practical response to climate-related security risks.
Guiding questions:
- Where are regional and minilateral approaches already making a difference in climate security – and what are the key ingredients for success?
- What are the main barriers to operationalising agreements and initiatives at this level?
- How can regional and minilateral efforts complement, rather than compete with, broader multilateral frameworks?
- What role can smaller or less traditionally engaged countries play in strengthening regional climate security?
