"Financing Land Restoration and Climate Action in Conflict-Affected Settings"
When: 7 October 2026, 09:00-10:30 CEST
Where: Berghof Foundation Operations gGmbH, Lindenstraße 34, 4th floor, 10969 Berlin
Format: Brief opening inputs followed by a moderated roundtable discussion with participants
Join us to explore how more finance for climate action and land restoration can reach fragile or conflict-affected countries.
Land degradation and drought can undermine food and water security, weaken livelihoods, contribute to displacement and compound instability. Well-designed land restoration can help address these interconnected risks while advancing climate action and biodiversity protection. Yet countries facing the greatest vulnerabilities remain severely underserved by international finance, and maintaining financing continuity remains a persistent challenge.
UNCCD COP17 saw renewed recognition of land restoration as an environmental peacebuilding approach to address climate- and conflict-related pressures. Building on this momentum, the Berghof Foundation and the Global Mechanism of the UNCCD will convene a focused consultation with donors, financing institutions, government stakeholders and selected climate-security and peacebuilding experts in the context of the Berlin Climate Security Conference and the Berlin Peace Dialogue.
Participants will discuss a range of approaches to improve access to finance and financing continuity for land restoration and climate action in fragile or conflict-affected settings, including the Peace Forest Initiative’s newly proposed Fragility Financing Mechanism: a platform approach to improve coordination among climate, development, peacebuilding, humanitarian and finance actors. The discussion will consider how these approaches could support existing donor and government programmes and what initial pilots should test to inform future financing decisions.
