Marcus Hicken is Director for Energy Diplomacy, Climate and Security at the German Federal Foreign Office, a role he has held since November 2022. A career diplomat since 1998, he previously led the division for Energy Diplomacy and Decarbonization and served as Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in Oslo, as well as Senior Advisor for Energy in Norway’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His extensive foreign service experience includes postings in Beijing, Oslo, Tokyo, and Berlin. Before joining the Foreign Service, Marcus worked as Economic Adviser to the Central Bank of Eritrea and as an Economist at Hamburgische Landesbank. Marcus studied economics and international relations and holds a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs in New York.
