Elshad Iskandarov

Elshad Iskandarov is Ambassador and Senior Adviser to COP29 Presidency. Early in his career, Elshad Iskandarov co-founded the National Assembly of Youth Organizations of Azerbaijan, serving as its Deputy Chairman, showcasing his dedication to youth empowerment and civic engagement. His subsequent roles within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan to the UN, further honed his diplomatic skills and deepened his understanding of global issues. His appointment as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in 2009 solidified his status as a respected representative of Azerbaijan on the international stage. Amb. Elshad Iskandarov served as a founding Secretary-General and then President of ICYF, which is an OIC-affiliated international organization, from 2005 to 2018. Ambassador Iskandarov's tenure as Chairman of the State Committee on Religious Associations of Azerbaijan (2012-2014) was marked by his efforts to promote tolerance within the country. He actively sought to foster inter-religious and intercultural dialogue, both domestically and internationally, championing Azerbaijan's model of peaceful coexistence. In his current role as Ambassador at Large and Senior Adviser to COP29 Chief Negotiator, Elshad Iskandarov plays a crucial part in Azerbaijan's engagement with the international community on pressing global challenges, notably on climate and peace. He graduated from the faculty of History of Baku State University with honours in 1993. He holds an MA degree in international affairs from the University of Columbia. He speaks Azerbaijani, English, Russian.
