This session was a high-level conversation between Ambassador Dr. Monica Juma, National Security Advisor to the Republic of Kenya, H.E. Hanna Tetteh, UN Under Secretary General and Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa and H.E. Jennifer Lee Morgan, State Secretary and Special Envoy for International Climate Action at the German Federal Foreign Office. It set out the challenges posed by climate change to peace and security, touching on migration, livelihoods, the energy transition, climate justice and differing responsibilities for Global North and South. In this context, attention was drawn to the flawed architecture of the global financial system and on potential pathways for improvement. The conversation outlined challenges, opportunities and priorities of coordinating and implementing efforts to assess and address climate and security risks in Africa. Furthermore, it shed light on the priorities for climate action in Africa to advance peace and security on the continent and globally.
