"Climate action in conflict: learning from local leadership"

Description: Climate risks are often highest for communities living in contexts of displacement, violent conflict, and contested or absent governance, which can limit access to the resources needed for adaptation, mitigation and the response to loss and damage. Humanitarian, development and peacebuilding organisations have long operated in these spaces, supporting local infrastructure, inclusion and trust-building — yet the knowledge and experience required to make durable climate solutions work remain insufficiently connected to global discussions on the design and delivery of climate finance.

This session brings together senior practitioners and decision-makers from humanitarian, development, and climate finance institutions, centering speakers from the Global South with first-hand experience of these challenges, to showcase what works and highlight what it will take to close this gap.

Objectives:

  • Surface the concrete challenges, risks, and limits — but also the opportunities — of climate finance in conflict settings, including militarised contexts where the state is absent or not a trusted partner
  • Move beyond diagnosis to produce specific asks for climate finance institutions, donors, and the humanitarian and peacebuilding community
  • Explore how policy-making and climate finance delivery can be shaped in conflict-sensitive ways

This event is co-organised by FriEnt (the Working Group on Peace and Development) and the Germany chapter of the ECCP (Environment, Climate, Conflict and Peace Community of Practice), a cross-sectoral network spanning humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding actors.
