Green(ing) EU Crisis Management

With the 2020 Climate Defence Roadmap, the EU has laid out its ideas for a set of concrete actions to address the links between defence and climate change as part of the wider climate-security nexus, notably in the areas of civilian and military Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), capability development, multilateralism and partnerships. This year, the Strategic Compass called for full implementation of the Roadmap. It is expected, that other documents, such as the upcoming New Compact for civilian CSDP missions, will also highlight measures on climate and environmental security. But what is the current status of implementation? What are the obstacles? Where the opportunities for Green(ing) EU Crisis Management? Panelists in this roundtable will discuss these questions with a focus on:
- How climate change is currently reflected in the EU’s external actions (programming, mandates, FDI, etc.), including the importance of analysis and strategic foresight in this context;
- What measures are planned or have been already taken to reduce the environmental footprint of EU external action (e.g. disaster response, CSDP, EU Delegations);
- How cooperation and partnerships with UN, NATO, AU, or OSCE could contribute to these targets.
