African leadership on climate change, peace and security ahead of COP29
When: 9 October 2024 | 17:30-19:00
Format: Roundtable discussion
Venue: Embassy of Ireland in Berlin
The linkages between climate change, peace and security are posing serious challenges all over the world, threatening the security and stability of communities across the world. Next to a strong globally coordinated response at multilateral and UN level, regional action is key to addressing cross-border climate security risks.
The African Union (AU) has been a leading advocate of action on climate change, peace and security. Keenly aware of regional risks on the African continent, the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU-PSC) requested the development of the first comprehensive study of climate security across the continent, with funding from the Governments of Ireland, Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The African Climate Security Risk Assessment (ACRA) is an African led in-depth analysis of key climate security risk pathways across the continent’s five regions. It explores regional responses to these challenges and emerging good practices. Based on this study, the AU is currently developing a Common African Position on climate change, peace and security (CAP-CPS). This CAP-CPS, due to be presented at COP29, will be the first time a regional organisation agrees on a joint position to tackle climate security risks.
African leadership on climate, peace and security can serve as an example for other regions of the world. Through sharing learning and best practice examples at the continental level with the AU and the regional level, through IGAD, this event aims to highlight African leadership on understanding and addressing climate, peace and security risks. As the EU works to implement its Joint Communication on Climate, Peace and Security, and ahead of the Climate and Peace Day at COP29, this panel discussion aims to provide a space for lessons on advancing climate, peace and security action regionally.
This side-event is by invitation only.
