Cities are at the forefront of two of the most pressing challenges of our time: combating climate change and managing migration. Under certain conditions, they are often also a crucible for instability and conflict. Cities account for over 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and face many of the impacts of climate change on their territories. Migration, whether internal or international, is also transforming urban territories, and is a driver of urbanization, growth, and diversity. While migration policies are determined at the national level, cities play a leading role in managing migration, as the primary destination for migrants. The aim of this session is to develop a better understanding and discuss options to better address the impacts of climate change on migration to and from urban areas, and how cities can be supported in their urban planning efforts and in their climate, reception and integration policies for migrants and displaced persons.
