Measuring impact in climate and peace programming

When: 7 October 2024 | 13:00-17:30

Format: Workshop

Venue: Berghof Foundation

Hosted by: Weathering Risk Peace Pillar

The Weathering Risk Peace Pillar implements projects in Iraq, Yemen, Somalia, Nigeria and the Bay of Bengal. The projects incorporate climate and environmental considerations into their consultations, dialogues and mediation work designed to prevent,  mitigate and resolve violent conflict. The Peace Pillar aims to translate climate security foresight and analysis into peacebuilding action where it is needed most. Through and from implementation, the Peace Pillar further aims to share and elevate evidence-based recommendations on mainstreaming climate and environmental security to support sustainable peace processes.

To better understand the value of integrated peace programming, the Peace Pillar monitors and evaluates the impact of its project interventions across its different peace, climate and environmental dimensions. The collected lessons learned, best practices and insights will be shared with practitioners and policy makers to contribute to a growing evidence base with the goal of enabling more targeted and systematic integrated peace programming in the future.

The five Peace Pillar projects are currently implementing monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) plans which have been designed according to a variety of slightly different methodologies, tailored to each program context. By March 2025, all partners will have an outcome evaluation completed. This private event will enable the consortium to share and discuss their learning so far as well as learn from the experiences and lessons of others in ways that can inform and influence the Peace Pillar MEL approaches and future outcomes. This is intended as an open discussion to enable brainstorming, cultivate best practices and encourage theory-testing. It is an opportunity to explore what is possible, what works and what doesn’t, as well as to advance innovation in any number of MEL spheres. Possible topics for discussion may include climate security indicators, innovative and effective MEL methodologies, and external communication approaches and products.

This side-event is by invitation only.
