Local solutions, global impact: Investing in community-driven and inclusive climate security approaches
When: 8 October 2024 | 15:30-16:40
Format: Workshop
Venue: Breakout room 2 (Adenauer-Saal)
Hosted by: the Women's Peace and Humanitarian Fund, the German Federal Foreign Office and the Peace Nexus Foundation
Despite bearing the brunt of climate-related security challenges, local communities are often sidelined in decision-making processes or activities to address climate insecurity. Programming and funding models that focus on the experiences and perspectives of local community leaders on community needs and resource management, in particular women, youth and indigenous leaders, are vital to develop effective solutions to address climate insecurity.
The session will deepen the understanding of innovative funding and implementation efforts that advance locally-driven climate security solutions, including those led by women, youth and indigenous leaders at local level. Participants will identify promising funding models, implementation strategies and policy practices that promote local and inclusive leadership to address climate-related security threats. This discussion will emphasize the critical importance of leveraging local knowledge and amplifying diverse perspectives of those most impacted by climate change.
The session's outcome will be a set of actionable recommendations for advancing locally-driven and inclusive climate security action to enhance investments and support for localization including through instruments such as the WPHF Funding Initiative on Women and Climate Security. These recommendations will guide funders, policymakers, and implementers to develop more collaborative approaches at the local level that can build a more secure and equitable future for all.
