Climate change impacts on crisis management and mediation

When: 8 October 2024 | 10:20-11:05

Format: Panel discussion

Venue: Plenary (Weltsaal)

Climate change, by its very nature, poses an increasing challenge to peace, conflict prevention and mediation, as well as the sustainability of hard-fought outcomes. As global temperatures increase, and hazards become more erratic, mediators and peace makers will be increasingly called upon to diffuse tensions over the effects and drivers of climate change. How can mediators, peacemakers and peace-processes address not only challenges faced by communities today as a result of climate-induced insecurity, but also ensure outcomes will weather the storms of tomorrow? What opportunities does the integration of climate considerations into peace-processes offer?

This high-level panel will focus on the integration of climate-related issues into peace process including risks, concerns and sustainability of peace outcomes. Discussions will also focus on processes for climate-smart mediation, obstacles and available tools.

Guiding questions:

  • How does climate change impact crises management?
  • How can peace processes integrate climate change considerations when one or more conflict parties lack awareness of and/or knowledge about climate-related issues?
  • How can peace processes integrate climate change considerations when one or more conflict parties are reluctant to address climate-related issues?
  • How can peace processes integrate climate change considerations when they are hard enough as is?
  • What is the availability and value of risk assessment/foresight to inform sustainable political settlements in a climate changed world?
  • What are the challenges and the possibilities presented by climate change to peace processes?
  • How can the need for long-term vision inherent in addressing climate change impacts be addressed in short-term political processes?
