Building peace through climate, land, and nature action: synergies for security under the three Rio Conventions

When: 21 October 2025 | 18:00 to 20:30 CEST

Format: 75-minute panel discussion with Q&A, followed by drinks reception

Venue: Embassy of Ireland, Jägerstraße 51, 10117 Berlin

Overview:

The interconnected crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation are increasingly recognised as drivers of insecurity and conflict. The three Rio Conventions—UNFCCC, UNCCD, and CBD—provide powerful frameworks for action but are too often implemented in silos. There is growing evidence that integrated approaches to climate mitigation and adaptation, land restoration, and biodiversity protection can serve as entry points for improved cooperation and peacebuilding, thereby enhancing security and stability. This panel aims to explore how leveraging synergies between the Rio Conventions can foster peace, with a focus on practical experiences and innovative partnerships in fragile contexts.

Objectives:

  • To highlight the peacebuilding and cooperation potential of integrated climate, land, and nature action.
  • To showcase concrete examples and lessons learned from international and regional organisations and civil society.
  • To discuss opportunities for cross-convention cooperation and innovative finance to support peace-positive outcomes.
  • To identify policy recommendations and partnership models for scaling up such approaches.

Participation is by invitation only. If you would like to attend, please reach out to pottsatadelphi [dot] de (potts[at]adelphi[dot]de) or moselloatadelphi [dot] de (mosello[at]adelphi[dot]de) for consideration.
