Ms. Charity Watson currently serves as the Climate, Peace and Security Advisor for the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan. She has spent the last ten years working in Afghanistan across politico-security, humanitarian, and environmental issues with the UN, NGOs, and research organizations, and before that in East Africa and the Middle East. Her current work focuses on addressing climate security risks in Afghanistan at a community level, fostering regional transboundary water cooperation, and creating space for climate action in the context of the Taliban’s August 2021 takeover, including leading UNAMA’s dialogue with the Taliban de facto authorities on climate change, water, and broader environmental issues. Ms. Watson graduated summa cum laude in International Affairs from the University of Colorado and has a Master’s in Environmental Governance and Policymaking from the Graduate Institute in Geneva.
